LiveDaily Interview: John Linnell of They Might Be Giants

In their 26 years of existence, They Might Be Giants [ tickets ] haven't met an audience tougher than on filled with thousands of children.
"Kids are a tough room," said multi-instrumentalist and vocalist John Linnell. "It's not as easy as you might think to play for kids. They're not as easily whipped up as adults. They're way more casual about how they listen to live music. They're not as socialized, obviously, as adults. A lot of them are just talking through the show and wandering around. It seems like a little thing but it's something you really notice as a band: that your audience is talking during the quiet section or while we're talking. That takes a lot of getting used to."

Big Brother's Alex: I Was Bossy Not Bullying

Expelled Big Brother contestant Alex De-Gale defended her behaviour in the house in an interview with host Davina McCall last night.
The 23-year-old defended the ‘bullying’ behaviour which saw her removed from the reality TV show, terming it “bossy“ instead.
She said, “If someone was upset I was the first person to console them. I was very compassionate with a lot of the people in there.
"That kind of vibe of me wasn’t as focused on as much. People say aggressive, I say assertive. People say bully, I say bossy.”
De-Gale also claimed she was misrepresented with clips of her telling housemates she was a “threat” to them,
“That was taken completely out of context. If somebody looks at me and it’s not threatening but a threat, there’s a difference in that,” she explained.
She added, “People can look at it how they wanted, I lived in the house with them and I never felt anyone felt threatened by me.
“I spoke to everyone every day, I never felt like I was bullying with these people. Sometimes my points maybe could’ve been put across in a better way.”

Medical science fiddling with violins' secrets

They are said to produce unparalleled sound quality. Until now, however, no one has been able to explain why 300-year-old Stradivarius violins have never been matched in terms of musical expressiveness and projection.A study has found that the secret may be explained by the consistent density of the two wooden panels used to make its body, rather than anything to do with the instrument's overall contours, varnish, angle of the neck, fingerboard or strings.Scientists compared five antique violins made by the Cremonese masters Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri Del Gesu with seven modern-day instruments by placing them in a medical scanner that could accurately gauge the density of the two wooden plates that make up the top and the back of the body. They found that, overall, the density of the two groups of violins was the same, but what differed significantly was that the two plates of the older instruments had a more uniform density than the modern plates.

The top plate of a violin is usually made of spruce and the back of maple. The scientists believe that the homogenous density of the Cremonese violins gives them the edge in terms of stiffness and sound-damping characteristics. The classical violins made by the two Cremonese masters have become the benchmark against which the sound of all other violins is compared.Dr Berend Stoel of Leiden University in the Netherlands, whose study is published in the online journal Public Library of Science, said the density variations within the wood were caused by the type of wood growth.Early growth in spring was less dense than summer growth, and the antique instruments appear to have a more balanced mix of early and late growth.- INDEPENDENT

Since their inception, Florida's Underoath has evolved from a run-of-the-mine Christian metalcore band into a fluid, dynamic, and energized rock mathematical group that adeptly blends emotive strain, charged punk john Rock rhythm, and low-set, engaging bottom end. Underoath formed in 1998 in vocalizer Dallas Taylor's bedchamber. Within a yr, the group -- with guitarist Tim McTague, drummer Aaron Gillespie, and keyboardist Christopher Dudley -- had inked a deal with Alabama's Takehold record label. In July 1999, Underoath released the six-song Act of Depression CD, which sold over 2,000 copies. The five-song Cries of the Past followed a yr later, selling over 3,000 copies.

In 2002, Takehold commissioned all of its bands and releases to Seattle's Tooth & Nail/Solid State label. Underoath gain the studio and recorded the ten songs that would represent their first record album below the unexampled partnership, suitably titled The Changing of Times. Taylor suddenly left the group in the middle of 2003's Warped Tour, going distressed fans contemplating the band's unsealed future. Underoath -- which as well included bassist Grant Brandell and guitar player James Smith -- continued on, however, recruitment ex-This Runs Through member Spencer Chamberlain as their new vocalizer.

A year later, the young lineup released They're Only Chasing Safety and supported it on the road with bands like Thrice, the Bled, Hopesfall, and Fear Before the March of Flames. A limited edition of the album was succeeding released in fall down 2005 that included four fillip tracks; touring continued with a spring 2006 headlining term of enlistment aboard Poison the Well, As Cities Burn, and others. Deciding to stick with Tooth & Nail rather of jump to a major label, the sextette showcased significant increment and maturity date on their future cause, Define the Great Line, issued in June 2006.

A heavier, more emotional album than the prison-breaking success of 2004's Chasing Safety, the criminal record sold close to hundred,000 copies in only its first base hebdomad of release and was certified gold by the year's end. Embraced by fans and critics alike -- considered the band's masterpiece by many -- the grouping supported it on Warped's main stage that summer. But with a month of dates leftover, tensions inside Underoath's ranks on the spur of the moment came to a point, causing them to shake off sour the traveling fete. Rumors swirled of their impendent separation, merely the guys remained adamant that a much-needed break was simply due to sort things kO'd. They proved themselves by returning in 2006 with Specify the Great Line. Climbing all the way to number two, the record album became the highest-charting Christian album on The Billboard two hundred since 1997 when LeAnn Rimes took the number unmatchable touch with You Light Up My Life.

Brought in concert in Stockholm by guitarists Peter Lindgren and Mikael Ã…kerfeldt in 1990, Opeth added progressive influences and acoustic instrumentation to their sword of Swedish death metal. As the group progressed, it was very common for an Opeth live set to fly in several different melodic directions -- and an medium song lasted no less than 10 transactions. Impressed by their originality, Candlelight Records released their debut full-length in 1995, which was highborn Orchidaceous plant, and featured a rhythm plane section of bassist Johan de Farfalla and drummer Anders Nordin. Edge of Sanity mastermind Dan Swano produced the band's ambitious second base album Morningrise in 1996, after which they embarked on a brief circuit with Morbid Angel. Century Media took card and not exclusively licenced Opeth's number one iI albums for the United States, just also planned on releasing their following album on both sides of the Atlantic. With the enlisting of bassist Martin Mendez and drummer Martin Lopez (ex-Amon Amarth) to replace the departed de Farfalla and Nordin, Opeth's tierce album My Arms, Your Hearse was released in 1998 to glowing reviews, establishing the ring as a leading personnel in progressive metal with death roots. 1999's Tranquil Life displayed even more of the band's prog rock influences, and the following yr the band played its first U.S. concert at the Milwaukee Metalfest. Blackwater Park, titled after an unknown psychedelic prog outfit from the '70s, was released in early 2001. The record album created a vast buzz among progressive metallic element fans, wHO had begun to lump the band in with other experimental alloy bands like Tiamat. Instead of waiting until the bombinate died down, the band released Delivery in the fall of 2002. The undermentioned twelvemonth Opeth surprised fans with the outlet of Damnation, an record album that was virtually completely innocent of whatsoever heavy metal trappings and focused instead on acoustic instruments and traditional songwriting. Ghost Reveries arrived in 2005 and proven to be a take back to form for the band.
