Why Strawberry Jam Is More Regulated Than Cigarettes

While jams and other consumer products are stringently regulated and are required to go past stringent tests before they can be sold, baccy has no restrictions and manufacturers can buoy, and do, add anything they want into the product.

Published in Respirology by Wiley-Blackwell, the invited editorial "Regulation of Consumer Products: The Bizarre Case of Strawberry Jam and Cigarettes" discusses the issues surrounding tobacco plant regulations and how the industry could be more effectively governed.

"The organization of regularization is a political swear out and occurs slowly. However, with the gradual only prolonged and massive epidemic of tobacco-related diseases, regularization of the industry's products - specifically the constituents of tobacco smoke - has to begin now", says author Dr. Nigel Gray, member of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Tobacco Regulation Study Group.*

Despite the complexities of regulating coffin nail manufacturing, the Tobacco Regulation Study Group, or TobReg, has proposed practical substance to start the progressive process of tobacco regulating. As a first stair, it has suggested setting mandatory levels for some of the major carcinogens and toxicants in cigarettes. In increase, regular reviews must also be conducted as initial toxin levels are considered generous by industry standards for many countries.

"There is no need for an expensive bureaucracy to oversee this regulation. Countries can plainly mandate TobReg's recommendations and publicize them as advice from the world's fundamental public wellness board. Countries without butt manufacturing facilities can just refuse to import cigaret that do not meet these standards", says Dr. Gray.

He adds, "International standards ar highly desirable as big amounts of cigarettes ar traded betwixt countries with differing national standards. It is timely for WHO to coiffure standards and offer earthly concern leadership - particularly as their Framework Convention on Tobacco Control is now in its implementation process, albeit a good deal slower than most world health advocates would desire. Singapore, Australia and New Zealand ar ideally placed to pioneer the introduction of these measures."

This paper volition be published in the September 2008 issue of Respirology (Vol. 13, Issue 6).

Originally called Chin Up, Switchfoot was formed in 1996 in San Diego, CA, by singer/guitarist Jonathan Foreman and his bassist crony Tim Foreman. With the addition of drummer Chad Butler, the band's name switched to Switchfoot (a surfboarding term) and they recorded their debut LP, 1997's The Legend of Chin, for Charlie Peacock's re:Think imprint. Raw Way to Be Human followed deuce long clip subsequently; it was a immense strike, with the title of respect track garnering a 1999 Dove Award for Song of the Year. Keyboardist Jerome Fontamillas united up for 2000's Learning to Breathe, which bring Switchfoot pickings more stairs toward mainstream modernistic rock candy. Breathe would prove to be a transition album for the group, and their first-class honours degree degree to sell over five c,000 copies. Its success, together with their significant presence on the stumble soundtrack to the 2002 Mandy Moore vehicle A Walk to Remember, congeal Switchfoot up for a major-label run. The Beautiful Letdown, their Columbia/RED debut, dropped in spring 2003; it delineated the quartet's full organic evolution toward a more approachable mainstream sound. The track record album finally went two-fold atomic number 78 on the forte of unvarying touring and the wireless hits "Dare You to Move" and "Meant to Live." It collide with number peerless on Billboard's Christian Albums chart and number 16 on the Top two hundred. In September 2005 Switchfoot returned with their twenty percent album, Goose egg Is Sound, their first-class honours degree Top Ten collide with on the Top two century (debuting at number triad); the record album went gold. It sparked some other radio tally in "Stars," and was the commencement Switchfoot transcription to admit the work of additional guitar player Andrew Shirley (erst of the present-day Christian group All Together Separate), wHO had been a touring extremity of Switchfoot since 2003. Wasting unforesightful time, the band was soon bet on in the studio with ex-serviceman U.K. producer Tim Palmer (U2, the Cure, etc.) to begin exercise on their sixth record album, one that found the guys widening their melodic oscilloscope; Oh! Gravity. then appeared at the tail end of 2006.

Guitarist David "Fusee" Fiuczynski came to prominence with the 1994 release, titled Lunar Crush. An excursion that as well featured the roughshod and sweeping reasoned and style of Hammond B-3 harmonium specialist John Medeski, of "Medeski, Martin & Wood" renown. Thus, Fiuczynski's angulate and often maverick wording on with feral chops and an expansive jazz fusion/rock vernacular alerted more than than only a few. The "Fuzee" has also recorded with drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson's high-energy ensembles, herald Jack Walrath, New York City "Downtown" composer/saxophonist John Zorn, the late advanced nothingness pianist Don Pullen, and crataegus oxycantha others of note. However, the guitarist's Screaming Headless Torsos quartette boasts world-beat rhythms integrated with complex jazz fusion time signatures and blare psychedelic overtones atop the musical rhythm section's osseous tissue stifling backbeats. Fiuczynski's 1999 drive, Jazz Punk, as well serves as an alluring glimpse into the artist's diverse repertoire and willingness to incorporate disparate art forms into his modernist overture. With this tone termination, the "Fuse" demonstrates a awful faculty for melding Chopin, John Philip Sousa, Hendrix, and other composers of distinction, into jazzy, electrified themes and shrewd statements with raw, untouched firepower. Fiuczynski's 2001 playing field day highborn Amandala was produced and recorded for his FuzeLicious Morsels mark, as the artist continues to seek out new terrain patch as intimately paralleling his signature musical mode of carrying out with forward-thinking methodologies and novel applications.

LiveDaily Interview: John Linnell of They Might Be Giants

In their 26 years of existence, They Might Be Giants [ tickets ] haven't met an audience tougher than on filled with thousands of children.
"Kids are a tough room," said multi-instrumentalist and vocalist John Linnell. "It's not as easy as you might think to play for kids. They're not as easily whipped up as adults. They're way more casual about how they listen to live music. They're not as socialized, obviously, as adults. A lot of them are just talking through the show and wandering around. It seems like a little thing but it's something you really notice as a band: that your audience is talking during the quiet section or while we're talking. That takes a lot of getting used to."

Big Brother's Alex: I Was Bossy Not Bullying

Expelled Big Brother contestant Alex De-Gale defended her behaviour in the house in an interview with host Davina McCall last night.
The 23-year-old defended the ‘bullying’ behaviour which saw her removed from the reality TV show, terming it “bossy“ instead.
She said, “If someone was upset I was the first person to console them. I was very compassionate with a lot of the people in there.
"That kind of vibe of me wasn’t as focused on as much. People say aggressive, I say assertive. People say bully, I say bossy.”
De-Gale also claimed she was misrepresented with clips of her telling housemates she was a “threat” to them,
“That was taken completely out of context. If somebody looks at me and it’s not threatening but a threat, there’s a difference in that,” she explained.
She added, “People can look at it how they wanted, I lived in the house with them and I never felt anyone felt threatened by me.
“I spoke to everyone every day, I never felt like I was bullying with these people. Sometimes my points maybe could’ve been put across in a better way.”

Medical science fiddling with violins' secrets

They are said to produce unparalleled sound quality. Until now, however, no one has been able to explain why 300-year-old Stradivarius violins have never been matched in terms of musical expressiveness and projection.A study has found that the secret may be explained by the consistent density of the two wooden panels used to make its body, rather than anything to do with the instrument's overall contours, varnish, angle of the neck, fingerboard or strings.Scientists compared five antique violins made by the Cremonese masters Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri Del Gesu with seven modern-day instruments by placing them in a medical scanner that could accurately gauge the density of the two wooden plates that make up the top and the back of the body. They found that, overall, the density of the two groups of violins was the same, but what differed significantly was that the two plates of the older instruments had a more uniform density than the modern plates.

The top plate of a violin is usually made of spruce and the back of maple. The scientists believe that the homogenous density of the Cremonese violins gives them the edge in terms of stiffness and sound-damping characteristics. The classical violins made by the two Cremonese masters have become the benchmark against which the sound of all other violins is compared.Dr Berend Stoel of Leiden University in the Netherlands, whose study is published in the online journal Public Library of Science, said the density variations within the wood were caused by the type of wood growth.Early growth in spring was less dense than summer growth, and the antique instruments appear to have a more balanced mix of early and late growth.- INDEPENDENT

Since their inception, Florida's Underoath has evolved from a run-of-the-mine Christian metalcore band into a fluid, dynamic, and energized rock mathematical group that adeptly blends emotive strain, charged punk john Rock rhythm, and low-set, engaging bottom end. Underoath formed in 1998 in vocalizer Dallas Taylor's bedchamber. Within a yr, the group -- with guitarist Tim McTague, drummer Aaron Gillespie, and keyboardist Christopher Dudley -- had inked a deal with Alabama's Takehold record label. In July 1999, Underoath released the six-song Act of Depression CD, which sold over 2,000 copies. The five-song Cries of the Past followed a yr later, selling over 3,000 copies.

In 2002, Takehold commissioned all of its bands and releases to Seattle's Tooth & Nail/Solid State label. Underoath gain the studio and recorded the ten songs that would represent their first record album below the unexampled partnership, suitably titled The Changing of Times. Taylor suddenly left the group in the middle of 2003's Warped Tour, going distressed fans contemplating the band's unsealed future. Underoath -- which as well included bassist Grant Brandell and guitar player James Smith -- continued on, however, recruitment ex-This Runs Through member Spencer Chamberlain as their new vocalizer.

A year later, the young lineup released They're Only Chasing Safety and supported it on the road with bands like Thrice, the Bled, Hopesfall, and Fear Before the March of Flames. A limited edition of the album was succeeding released in fall down 2005 that included four fillip tracks; touring continued with a spring 2006 headlining term of enlistment aboard Poison the Well, As Cities Burn, and others. Deciding to stick with Tooth & Nail rather of jump to a major label, the sextette showcased significant increment and maturity date on their future cause, Define the Great Line, issued in June 2006.

A heavier, more emotional album than the prison-breaking success of 2004's Chasing Safety, the criminal record sold close to hundred,000 copies in only its first base hebdomad of release and was certified gold by the year's end. Embraced by fans and critics alike -- considered the band's masterpiece by many -- the grouping supported it on Warped's main stage that summer. But with a month of dates leftover, tensions inside Underoath's ranks on the spur of the moment came to a point, causing them to shake off sour the traveling fete. Rumors swirled of their impendent separation, merely the guys remained adamant that a much-needed break was simply due to sort things kO'd. They proved themselves by returning in 2006 with Specify the Great Line. Climbing all the way to number two, the record album became the highest-charting Christian album on The Billboard two hundred since 1997 when LeAnn Rimes took the number unmatchable touch with You Light Up My Life.

The life-time storey of Somalia-born and Denmark-based vocalizer Maryam Mursal would be incredible were it not true. One of the first professional female vocalists of Muslim religious belief, Mursal was a star in her country of origin spell still in her teens. Having developed the alone portmanteau word of Islamic and African influences that she calls "Somalian Jazz" in the nightclubs, Mursal was a top recording artist by the mid-'80s. With the discharge of her single, "Ulimada (The Professor)," in 1986, all the same, her whole world changed. As she explained during a 1998 interview, "the lyrics were a pernicious criticism of our chief Executive, Mohammed Siad Barre, for putting to death his have people" and lED to her music being banned by the Somalian regime. Mursal was forced to temporarily give up her musical career and work as Somalia's first female taxi and camion driver. Although the independence of Somalia allowed her to come back to music, intertribal fighting light-emitting diode her to fly the country, along with cinque of her ten children. After outlay a brief period in a refugee camp in Kenya, she fled the summer camp subsequently her daughters were threatened with ravishment. Bribing their way out, they embarked on a seven-month tripper crosswise the Horn of Africa, eventually devising their way to Denmark where they were granted refugee status. Mursal's fortunes changed for the better, in 1992, when she was overheard singing to a mathematical group of three hundred bloke refugees by Soren Kjoer Jensen, a mercenary photographer world Health Organization became her producer and director. Two years subsequently, she was signed to the Real World record tag by Peter Gabriel, wHO called her "an artist of enormous blessing and extraordinary vocal big businessman." Her debut album, The Journey, produced by Simon Emmerson and Martin Russell of the Afro Celt Sound System, was a virtuoso blend of Somali jazz and western instrumentation.

Born into a Muslim fellowship of all daughters, Mursal grew up in the Midgen kindred or kin, an cultural mathematical group that was viewed as gypsies in Somalia. Her early musical experiences came as a member of the mathematical group, Waaberi, a national company of dancers, musicians, singers, writers, and composers. Brought in concert in Stockholm by guitarists Peter Lindgren and Mikael Ã…kerfeldt in 1990, Opeth added progressive influences and acoustic instrumentation to their sword of Swedish death metal. As the group progressed, it was very common for an Opeth live set to fly in several different melodic directions -- and an medium song lasted no less than 10 transactions. Impressed by their originality, Candlelight Records released their debut full-length in 1995, which was highborn Orchidaceous plant, and featured a rhythm plane section of bassist Johan de Farfalla and drummer Anders Nordin. Edge of Sanity mastermind Dan Swano produced the band's ambitious second base album Morningrise in 1996, after which they embarked on a brief circuit with Morbid Angel. Century Media took card and not exclusively licenced Opeth's number one iI albums for the United States, just also planned on releasing their following album on both sides of the Atlantic. With the enlisting of bassist Martin Mendez and drummer Martin Lopez (ex-Amon Amarth) to replace the departed de Farfalla and Nordin, Opeth's tierce album My Arms, Your Hearse was released in 1998 to glowing reviews, establishing the ring as a leading personnel in progressive metal with death roots. 1999's Tranquil Life displayed even more of the band's prog rock influences, and the following yr the band played its first U.S. concert at the Milwaukee Metalfest. Blackwater Park, titled after an unknown psychedelic prog outfit from the '70s, was released in early 2001. The record album created a vast buzz among progressive metallic element fans, wHO had begun to lump the band in with other experimental alloy bands like Tiamat. Instead of waiting until the bombinate died down, the band released Delivery in the fall of 2002. The undermentioned twelvemonth Opeth surprised fans with the outlet of Damnation, an record album that was virtually completely innocent of whatsoever heavy metal trappings and focused instead on acoustic instruments and traditional songwriting. Ghost Reveries arrived in 2005 and proven to be a take back to form for the band.
